Myrtle Beach, the largest city on the Grand Strand with more than 25,000 residents, has 60 miles of wide, sandy beaches. Before European explorers discovered the area, Waccamaw and Winyah Indians named it Chicora, meaning “the land.” It was part of the Withers family property in 1900 when Burroughs and Collins, a timber and turpentine company, constructed a railroad to the beach and built the first hotel, the Seaside Inn. At the time oceanfront lots sold for $25.
A group of investors set the tone for the resort in the 1920s with the opening of 300-room Ocean Forest Hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a health club, horse stables and the area’s first golf club. To make way for new development, it was torn down half a century later except for the golf club, which became the Pine Lakes International Country Club, awarded a four -star rating by Golf Digest. Today you can find a golf course within 10 minutes wherever you are.
The Intracoastal Waterway opened in 1936 to pleasure boats and commercial shipping, followed in 1940 by the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which patrolled coastal waters during World War II.
Today you can dine at more than 1,700 restaurants, jet ski, windsurf, sail, or kayak. There’s also freshwater, ocean and deep sea saltwater fishing. When evening falls, you have a choice of Broadway musicals, jousting tournaments, big-name concerts, and variety venues at a dozen world-class theaters. The shopping is equally fabulous, ranging from thrifty outlets and flea markets to unique boutiques. And much more!
