Pawleys Island, 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach an 70 miles north of Charleston, is one of the oldest Summer resorts on the East Coast. It was settled in the early 1700's by the families of rice planters who owned plantations on neighboring rivers. The planters did not know about malaria, but they recognized the fact that it was unhealthy to remain on the rivers during the hot summer months, and that the coast was much more desirable. They moved their families, horses, cows, bedding, provisions, and furniture annually to Pawleys in May of each year, remaining until the first frost in November.
The town, incorporated in 1985, developed a special ambiance from this leisurely existence, a charm which remains very much in Pawleys today. Also remaining are 12 residences in the historic district, which date from the late 1700's to the mid 1800's.
The island continues to be known for its shoe-less, carefree, laid-back life style. You can go crabbing in the adjacent creeks, fish in the brackish waters, swing in a rope hammock, and enjoy the unspoiled, unsophisticated, casual, delightful stretch of wide beach and sand dunes.
