Murrells Inlet is the acknowledge Seafood Capital of South Carolina due to its riches:  fresh fish, clams, oysters, and crabs drawn from the surrounding waters.

A century ago Murrells Inlet was a waterlogged area filled with rice plantations and steamships. Recognizing the marshland’s unique beauty, several residents in the 1990s collaborated on a vision that would make it a destination for good food and a variety of recreational opportunities.

Take a tour of the surrounding marshes, ride over miles of new biking trails, or walk the half-mile Marshwalk over the marshland for inlet glimpses of wildlife and waterfowl from the new Veterans Pier. Or go fishing. Fishing, both of the commercial and weekend variety, remains a staple of this historic village.

Murrells Inlet is also known for the abundance of art and antiques, including traditional antiques and creatively refinished painted furniture in resale shops. Artisan stores also feature everything from honey to carved driftwood to paintings in every store.

A modern plus is the Waccamaw Community Hospital, which opened in 2002. It has already received numerous accolades for excellent care, including the 2008 Community Hospital of the Year award. Twenty-four hour emergency services, obstetrics, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and medical/surgical units are all available; the Critical Care Unit features the latest technology with patient/family convenience and comfort.
