Southport is a charming town, located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River where it intersects with the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. It has been hailed as one of the most authentic coastal communities on the eastern coast due to its historic homes, lush landscaping, and shimmering miles of water in every direction.

Southport is reminiscent of peaceful fishing villages of yesteryear, with tree-lined streets, Victorian-style homes, antique stores, art galleries, restaurants, and historic sites. Waterfront Park and City Pier offer incredible views of passing vessels.

Centuries of boating men and women have left their mark on this village. Its miles of surf make fishing a popular sport. For a quick trip to area attractions and nearby islands, the local ferry is convenient. If you aren't in a hurry, take an hour’s walk through town under live oak trees,  through ancient graveyards (three centuries of history). Or explore a nearby creek where Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, was repairing his ship when he was captured. If you stop for a day, you may be captured by the charm and visitors welcome attitude.

A number of movies have been filmed in Southport Crimes of the Heart, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Summer Catch, Domestic Disturbance, Nights In Rodanthe, and A Walk to Remember. An Oprah Winfrey movie, The Wedding and Summer Catch are other films along with the filming locale of the television series Revenge and Under the Dome.

Several marinas in the area cater to the dock and dry lift boat enthusiasts and their services spill over to non-boaters as well. Coastal cruisers come by car, boat or by plane to this quaint town. There is a small airport for private planes to land. The Indigo Plantation Marina beside the high-rise bridge, harbors the Bald Head Island Ferry, another day's journey if you are so inclined. When you are weary of looking and shopping, go down to the waterfront and rock in a swing across from the Whittlers' Bench. Listen to locals talk about fishing and politics and watch the boats and gulls.

Though the town has always had a small population with just 2300 year-round residents currently, it has thrived as fishing village and a port where travelers along the ocean waters and the Cape Fear River can dock and enjoy a rest on land.
